🔬 Thixotropic Thickening Principle of Bentonite

Bentonite is a natural clay mineral with montmorillonite as its main component. Its layered structure can be fully dispersed in water, forming a "card house" three-dimensional network structure, giving the system excellent thixotropy and anti-settlement properties. Water-based bentonite is suitable for aqueous systems, while organic bentonite is surface-modified for low and medium polarity solvent systems.

Thickening at Rest
Bentonite layered structure forms card house network, system viscosity increases, preventing sedimentation and sagging
💧
Shear Thinning
Application shear breaks the card house network, viscosity rapidly decreases, facilitating spreading and leveling
🧊
Recovery Thickening
After shear stops, card house network rapidly rebuilds, restoring high viscosity, preventing sagging

Product Introduction
Bentonite · Montmorillonite · Thixotropic Thickening · Anti-Settlement

Bentonite is a natural clay with montmorillonite as its main mineral component, featuring a unique layered structure and strong water absorption and swelling properties. When dispersed in water, bentonite platelets form a "card house" three-dimensional network, giving the system excellent thixotropy and anti-settlement properties.

Hico water-based bentonite Clayminton LB has colloid index ≥98, expansivity >30, apparent viscosity ≥7000 CPS, suitable for water-based coatings, putty and other aqueous systems. Hico organic bentonite is highly purified and modified from natural calcium bentonite, mainly suitable for low and medium polarity solvent paints, inks and other products, super easy to disperse, no need of pre-gel and polar activator.

Hico bentonite provides 2 series with 3 models, covering aqueous systems and organic solvent systems, with thixotropy index ≥6.0, pH 5-12 wide range applicable, making it an ideal anti-settlement thickening agent for coatings, inks, sealants and other industries.
